A mysterious drone flying over rural areas under the cover of darkness has become a new challenge for the Gorakhpur police and administration. Villagers in Barhalganj, Gola, Pipiganj, Khorabar, Chauri Chaura, and Sahjanwa say the drone has been spotted hovering over fields and populated areas for long durations, leaving residents alarmed. Many suspect it is being used by cattle smugglers or thieves for reconnaissance before crimes.

Police teams have rushed to the scene several times after receiving complaints. Last week, a patrolling team even chased the drone for four to five kilometres but failed to catch it due to its altitude and speed. Despite repeated sightings, neither the operator nor the motive behind the flights has been identified. Fearful of surveillance, villagers are staying awake at night to keep watch, while women and children say they avoid stepping out after dark.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajkaran Nayyar has directed police stations to respond immediately to drone alerts and reassure villagers. DIG Dr S. Chanappa said incidents are being probed at all levels, warning that unauthorised drone flights are a punishable offence.

Locals believe criminals may be mapping cattle smuggling routes, conducting reconnaissance before thefts, or monitoring police patrols. Officials noted that high-range drones, capable of flying 5–7 km with night vision cameras and GPS, can operate silently, making them difficult to track.

Authorities have advised residents to immediately inform police on 112 upon spotting drones, install CCTV near homes and cattle sheds, improve night lighting, and remain vigilant without spreading rumours.

Drone regulations were introduced in Gorakhpur in 2023, dividing the city into Red, Yellow, and Green Zones. Flying drones is strictly prohibited near the Air Force station, airport, and residential areas, while operations in Yellow Zones require prior SSP approval.

In Green Zones, drones may fly up to 400 feet without permission, but registration with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is mandatory. Police have warned that violations will result in confiscation and legal action.
