In response to a series of accidents over the past two and a half years, the National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) implementing agency, PNC, is set to intensify safety and security measures along the under-construction Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway. The expressway is targeted for completion by January 2026, and officials have been directed to ensure that no further incidents occur during this period.

The stretch has witnessed multiple mishaps in recent years, vehicles falling into open drains, girders collapsing onto cars due to Hydra crane cable failures, and construction materials such as iron angles falling onto moving traffic below.

Just this Saturday, a Hydra crane overturned on the elevated section, and near the Hydel police outpost in Sarojininagar, the front of another crane broke through a barrier, narrowly avoiding a major accident.

Despite repeated incidents, NHAI had not implemented strong preventive measures. However, officials now claim stricter action will be taken. Ankur Jain, administrative officer of PNC, said that enhanced vigilance will be maintained for all construction work, whether on the elevated road or the main highway.

Additional guards will be deployed, and traffic will be completely halted during critical construction activities to prevent accidents until the project is completed.
