With a recent surge in dengue cases, health experts have issued a special alert for pregnant women. Doctors are warning that the dengue virus, transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, poses a significantly greater threat to expectant mothers than to the general population, as the infection can endanger the fetus and increase the risk of hemorrhage. According to the District Malaria Department, the total number of dengue patients in the district rose to 260 as of Monday.
Dr Ajay Rana, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology and the acting Chief Medical Superintendent of the District Hospital, explained that dengue presents unique complications during pregnancy. "During pregnancy, blood volume increases and blood clots faster than normal," he stated. "The challenge is that when the infection spreads, immunity is severely compromised by issues like hypertension and blood pressure fluctuations, leading to a rapid drop in platelets and affecting liver function." These factors, he noted, can make the disease life-threatening.
Dr Rana emphasised that a fever in an expectant mother increases the risk of the infection spreading to the fetus. A high fever can also induce premature labor, and other dengue symptoms can lead to further serious complications. He strongly advised that any pregnant woman who develops a fever, regardless of its severity, should seek immediate treatment from a senior doctor.

Despite the rising case count in the district, Dr Rana mentioned that the daily admission rate for dengue at the district hospital has recently decreased. He noted that while the hospital was previously admitting five to eight patients daily, that number has now dropped to just one or two.
