The long-awaited Noida International Airport in Jewar is finally set to open. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu announced on Wednesday that the airport will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 30, with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also in attendance. The Prime Minister will address a public meeting expected to draw over 1,00,000 people from Gautam Buddha Nagar, neighbouring districts, and the nearby states of Delhi and Haryana.
Domestic flights will commence within 45 days of the inauguration, initially connecting the airport to ten major cities, including Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Lucknow, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur.
The airport will start with an annual passenger capacity of 5 million, designed to expand up to 120 lakh with the construction of a second runway and terminal once 80 per cent capacity is reached.
Noida International Airport will feature ten aerobridges, enabling simultaneous boarding and deboarding, separate gates for domestic and international passengers, and contactless DigiYatra facilities using facial recognition and QR codes. Passenger safety will be enhanced through Automated Tray Retrieval Systems (ATRS) for baggage handling.
The airport has introduced a fixed revenue-sharing model, with the government set to earn Rs 400.97 per passenger ticket from the eighth year. Security measures include a 7-foot-high barbed wire boundary, 15 electrified wires, 360-degree cameras at every 50 meters, and 1,031 CISF personnel on duty round the clock.
Mobile connectivity at the airport will be upgraded with 4G and 5G infrastructure by ACES India. A multi-modal cargo hub has been built on 30 acres to support agricultural and other cargo, connected by an 8.25-kilometre road to the Yamuna Expressway.
The airport’s accessibility is further enhanced by link roads to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Yamuna Expressway, and the upcoming Ganga Expressway. Plans are underway for rail connectivity through North Central Railway via Ghaziabad and Greater Noida.
The airport project was first announced in 2002, but gained momentum after 2014 under Prime Minister Modi’s government. The foundation stone was laid on November 25, 2021. Zurich Airport International AG was appointed as the developer, with Tata Projects executing construction. The terminal building is expected to be completed by mid-October 2025, while the runway, ATC, apron, and lighting systems are already ready.
