Construction on the new Anandnagar-Ghughli railway line has begun, with the North Eastern Railway administration initiating soil testing in several villages, including Phulwariya, after completing the land acquisition process.
Work has also started on major structures, with the foundation for bridges, including the important bridge number 50, now being laid.
The new electrified railway line, approved by the Railway Board in March 2019 with a sanctioned budget of Rs 958.27 crore, is targeted for completion by 2027. Construction has accelerated after its inclusion in the Railway Board's special projects.
Project Details And Phases
The approximately 52 km long line will run from Anandnagar to Ghughli via Maharajganj, passing through 53 villages. The acquisition of 183 hectares of land for the project was completed in July.
The project is divided into two phases:
Phase 1: A 25 km railway line from Ghughli to Maharajganj.
Phase 2: A 27 km railway line from Maharajganj to Anandnagar.
Strategic Importance And Benefits
This new line will connect the Maharajganj district headquarters, located in the Terai region of the Himalayas, to the railway network for the first time, fostering local development.
Key benefits include:
Reduced Distance: The distance from Gonda to Ghughli via Anandnagar and Maharajganj will be reduced by approximately 42 km compared to the Gorakhpur route.
New Alternative Route: It will create an alternative route to North-East India (via Valmikinagar and Raxaul) for trains arriving from North India, serving as a new bypass for the North Eastern Railway.
Decongestion: The load on Gorakhpur Junction will be reduced, and overall track capacity will increase.
Freight Movement: Goods trains will be able to run directly from Gonda via the Anandnagar-Ghughli route to the Narkatiaganj-Muzaffarpur railway line.
Regional Connectivity: Travel will become easier for people from Nepal, in addition to those from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Infrastructure And Stations
The new line will feature significant infrastructure, including:
- 25 large bridges
- 8 small bridges
- 1 road overbridge
- 32 underpasses
A total of seven railway stations will be built: Anand Nagar, Parisa Buzurg, PakriNaunia, Maharajganj, Shikarpur, PipraMunderi, and Ghughli.
