A second-year BTech student in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki died by suicide after reportedly being blackmailed for Rs 30 lakh by his girlfriend’s father. The incident occurred in the Lakhpedabagh area under the Kotwali Nagar, Uttar Pradesh and has triggered a police investigation into allegations of harassment, extortion, and abetment to suicide.

According to News18, the deceased, Tushar Verma, was a student at Ram Swaroop University. According to his family, he was under immense stress due to alleged threats and blackmail from his girlfriend’s father, identified as Majnu Patel, who reportedly demanded Rs 30 lakh to drop previous complaints.

After Tushar's death, the family performed his last rites and later discovered crucial evidence on his mobile phone, prompting them to lodge a police complaint against the girl and her family. Tushar’s mother, Sushma Verma, confirmed her son was in a relationship and shared photographs of the couple. She alleged that the girl’s father not only lodged repeated complaints but also harassed them financially despite a prior monetary settlement.

Tushar’s uncle added that the girl, Aradhya, an intermediate student, lived with her brother in Barabanki. Tushar was acquainted with her family and had often visited their home. A week before the incident, Aradhya’s family accused Tushar of harassment, which reportedly led to a police-mediated compromise involving a large financial payout. However, the threats and demands allegedly continued even after that.
