The famous sculptor Ram Sutar is no longer with us. He breathed his last late Wednesday night at his residence in Noida. The news was confirmed by his son, Anil Sutar. Ram Sutar, who had crossed the milestone of 100 years of age this year, moved to Delhi from his hometown in Maharashtra 67 years ago.
It has been announced that he will be accorded a Guard of Honour on Thursday. Sutar was the creative mind behind the design of the world's tallest statue, the 'Statue of Unity' in Gujarat. He also crafted the iconic statues of Mahatma Gandhi in a meditative pose and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on horseback, both of which are installed in the Parliament complex. He was a gold medalist from the JJ School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai.
Recently, on November 14, 2025, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis honored him with the Maharashtra Bhushan Award.
Ram Sutar was born on February 19, 1925, in Godhra, Gujarat. Throughout his illustrious career, he created numerous famous sculptures.

Statue of Unity: Dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, this is the tallest statue in the world, standing at a height of 182 meters.
Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj: He also created the 100-foot-tall statue of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj located in Moshi, Pune.
Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar: He created several statues of Dr Ambedkar, including the one installed at Chaityabhoomi in Mumbai.

Mahatma Gandhi: Sutar crafted over 350 statues of Mahatma Gandhi, which are installed across the globe.
Lord Shiva: The 153-foot-tall statue of Lord Shiva in Bengaluru is another one of his major masterpieces.
According to NDTV India, Ram Sutar received numerous accolades for his work, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan. He was also honored with India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna in 2019.
