In a significant ruling on Monday, the Supreme Court made it mandatory for all teachers seeking recruitment or promotion to clear the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). The decision is expected to directly impact thousands of teachers across Uttar Pradesh.
Until now, only candidates recruited after 2011 were required to pass the TET, while a large number of teachers appointed before 2010 had been exempt. With the latest order, however, all teachers with five or more years of service remaining will now have to clear the test to continue in service and to be eligible for promotions.

Officials from the Basic Education Department said the order could pose a challenge for many teachers awaiting promotions, as no official list currently exists of pre-2010 appointees who have cleared TET.

The ruling is seen as a move to standardise teacher eligibility but may create hurdles for thousands of educators who were appointed before the TET requirement was introduced.
