In a significant step towards eradicating tuberculosis (TB), Uttar Pradesh declared 7,191 village councils (Gram Panchayats) TB-free in 2024.This achievement brings the total number of TB-free villages in the state to 8,563, up from 1,372 in 2023. Notably, 435 Panchayats have achieved this status for the second consecutive year.
The steady rise in TB-free Gram Panchayats has strengthened hopes that Uttar Pradesh will achieve its goal of becoming a TB-free state by 2025, as envisioned by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
According to State TB Officer Dr Shailendra Bhatnagar, Uttar Pradesh has a total of 57,783 Gram Panchayats. In 2023, 1,372 of them were declared TB-free, while the number surged significantly in 2024. All TB-free Panchayats have been recognised with a Mahatma Gandhi statue and a certificate of honor.

Dr Bhatnagar also highlighted the pivotal role played by women Gram Pradhans in this achievement. Principal Secretary of the Medical and Health Department, Parth Sarathi Sen Sharma, stated that intensive efforts are underway to combat TB, including expanded testing, improved treatment, and wider access to facilities for patients.
The “TB-free Gram Panchayat” initiative is focused on encouraging public participation in TB awareness, identification, and prevention. This grassroots-driven model has led to collective action, contributing to the gradual eradication of the disease in rural areas.
