With an eye on the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated early preparations to ensure an error-free voter list. For the first time, District Election Officers (DEOs) across the state are being given in-person training to enhance the accuracy of electoral rolls.

The third and final phase of this training was held in Lucknow on Wednesday under the supervision of Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Navdeep Rinwa. Earlier sessions were conducted in Meerut and Varanasi.

Speaking at the one-day workshop organised at the Awas Vikas Parishad headquarters, CEO Rinwa emphasised the importance of a clean and updated voter list. He instructed officials to take the upcoming voter revision campaign seriously to avoid discrepancies during elections. “No error should be found in the voter list at the time of polling,” he said.

DEOs were briefed on ECI guidelines, polling station management, and election-related laws. A key change highlighted during the training is the reduction of voters per polling booth—from 1,500 in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to 1,200 for the 2027 Assembly elections. This move is expected to increase the number of polling booths by over 21,000, bringing the total to approximately 1.83 lakh.

CEO Rinwa stressed the importance of keeping family members’ names registered under the same polling booth to avoid confusion. He also directed DEOs to personally oversee the voter list revision process and ensure clear photographs for easy identification of voters on polling day.

Further instructions included:

-Distributing voter photo identity cards promptly in coordination with the postal department.

-Timely and quality resolution of complaints received on the election portal.

-Ensuring necessary basic facilities at all polling stations.

-Holding regular meetings with representatives of political parties and encouraging them to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) at each booth.

-Instructing BLOs (Booth Level Officers) to conduct thorough door-to-door verification and receive proper training for error-free online data feeding.

DEOs were also trained in using digital tools such as the ERO Net, BLO App, and Voter Helpline App. Emphasis was laid on collecting accurate citizen data, including mobile numbers, while filling Forms 6, 7, and 8 for voter addition, deletion, and corrections, respectively.

The training concluded with an evaluation and examination of participating officers. DEOs from multiple districts, including Lucknow, Kanpur Nagar, Gorakhpur, Bareilly, Aligarh, Agra, Moradabad, and Jhansi, took part in the session.
