UP BJP Chief Election: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has finalised the much-awaited state president election schedule. The party has decided to hold the state president election on December 13 and 14. Nominations will be filed on the first day, followed by scrutiny and withdrawals. If only one nomination is filed, the election will be held unanimously. If more than one candidate files nominations, voting and counting will take place on the second day, December 14. Members will also be elected to the National Council.
BJP Uttar Pradesh Organisation Election Officer and former Union Minister Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey stated on Thursday that nominations for the state president election will be filed at the party's state headquarters between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm on December 13. Vinod Tawde, the party's National General Secretary and Central Election Observer, is also coming to Lucknow for this election. The state president election will be conducted under his supervision. Central Election Officer and Union Minister Piyush Goyal will complete the election process on December 14.
The party has called all the state's prominent leaders, MPs, MLAs, and approximately 400 members of the provincial council to Lucknow. Members of the provincial council vote in the election of the state president. Workers are also eager for the new president. It is believed that, keeping in mind the preparations for the 2027 assembly elections, a candidate will be selected who can effectively coordinate between the organization and the government.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, both Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, and key leaders of the organisation may appear as proposers for the nomination of the state president. It is also being said that the national leadership has made organisational strength, grassroots presence, and widespread acceptance the primary criteria for selecting the state president this time.
Bhupendra Chaudhary Meets PM Modi
Amidst speculation about the appointment of the new BJP state president, current state president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. Following the BJP's relatively poor performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Chaudhary submitted his resignation to the central leadership. However, his resignation was not accepted.
BJP Likely To Bet On OBC Candidate
Ahead of next year's Panchayat elections and the 2027 Assembly elections, the BJP may bet on an OBC candidate in Uttar Pradesh. This is also being seen within the party as a counter to the opposition's PDA (Backwards, Dalit, Minority) formula.
Who Are In The Race?
The main contenders for the post of state president include Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, Livestock Minister Dharampal Singh, Water Power Minister Swatantra Dev Singh, State General Secretary Amar Pal Maurya, Union Minister BL Verma, MP Baburam Nishad, Union Minister Pankaj Chaudhary, and Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti. Among the Dalit candidates, the names of Vinod Sonkar, Vidya Sagar Sonkar, and Jugal Kishore are also being discussed.
