To boost higher education in the state, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the establishment of three new private universities in Ayodhya, Mathura, and Ghaziabad. The decision was taken during the state cabinet meeting held on Tuesday.
The cabinet granted a Letter of Permission (LoP) to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ramayana University in Ayodhya, and Letters of Intent (LoI) to proposed universities in Mathura and Ghaziabad. With these additions, the total number of private universities in Uttar Pradesh will increase from 47 to 50, currently catering to approximately 2.70 lakh students.
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ramayana University will be developed by the Maharishi Ramayana Vidyapeeth Trust, Delhi, on 20.25 acres in Ayodhya. The university will specialise in Indian culture, Ramayana literature, yoga, meditation, and Vedic studies.
The project received an LoI on 18 May 2023 and has now been granted a formal LoP, paving the way for admissions from the current academic session. The university will be included in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Private University (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.
In Ghaziabad, Ajay Kumar Garg University is set to be established in Dasna village. Currently functioning as an engineering college affiliated with Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), the institution will now gain the status of an independent private university. The move is expected to enhance technical and management education opportunities in the NCR region.
Meanwhile, Bhakti Vedanta University will be set up by ISKCON in Azhai Khurd village, Chhata tehsil of Mathura district. Spread over 50.88 acres, the proposal received cabinet approval following the earlier recommendation of an LoI on 29 October 2024.
In addition, the cabinet approved the revised construction proposal for Siddharth University in Kapilvastu, Siddharthnagar, aimed at strengthening the institution's infrastructure.
Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay said the new universities would provide world-class education and reduce the need for students to migrate to bigger cities or abroad for higher studies.
