Six months into the 2025-26 academic session, thousands of students in classes 1 to 8 across numerous districts in Uttar Pradesh are still without their free textbooks. This significant delay by the Basic Education Department is directly impacting children's studies, particularly with half-yearly examinations approaching, leaving both parents and teachers deeply concerned.
The free textbooks, which are printed at the government level and cannot be purchased from the open market, are distributed to primary and upper primary classes annually. This year's delay has left students unable to complete practice exercises and homework, causing them to fall behind in their curriculum. The problem is reported to be most severe in inter-colleges that have attached primary classes, with the shortage persisting in several districts, including the state capital, Lucknow.
Principals Highlight Shortages Of Key Textbooks
School principals have confirmed the non-receipt of essential books for critical subjects.
Monika Srivastava, Principal of Kasturba Kanya Inter College in Lucknow, stated that students from classes six to eight are yet to receive textbooks for crucial subjects like Geography, Home Craft, Home Skills, Hindi, Mathematics, and Science.
Similarly, TP Yadav, Principal of JP Sahu Inter College in Mehdiganj, also reported that essential books for Mathematics and Science have not been made available to the children.
Teachers' Union Writes to Education Director
Escalating the matter, the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh Ekjut (a teachers' union) has formally raised the issue. Sohanlal Verma, the union's State President, has written to the Director General of School Education, highlighting that teaching work is being "severely affected."

In the letter, he noted that despite school staff repeatedly visiting the designated distribution centers, the supply of books has still not arrived, creating a critical situation as exams draw near.
