The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the construction of a six-lane greenfield Link Expressway connecting the Agra-Lucknow Expressway to the Purvanchal Expressway. Designed for future expansion to eight lanes, the new corridor will significantly ease traffic congestion in Lucknow and enhance connectivity across major cities in the state.

Spanning approximately 49.96 kilometres, the expressway will run from the first toll plaza at Mahura Kala on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway to the first toll on the Purvanchal Expressway. With a proposed design speed of 120 kmph, the route aims to facilitate faster travel between Agra, Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Ghazipur.

The project will require the acquisition of around 597 hectares of land across 39 villages in the Lucknow district, including areas in Sadar, Sarojininagar, and Mohanlalganj tehsils. The expressway will pass through key villages such as Adampur, Sakabhawai, Kuraini, Paschim Parwar, Barkat Nagar, and Kalpahas. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 4,775.84 crore.

Currently, heavy vehicles travelling between the two expressways must pass through congested areas of Lucknow such as Awadh Chauraha, Telibagh, Arjunganj, and Gosaiganj. The new expressway is expected to divert this traffic, easing urban congestion and travel time.

Developed under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) model, the project will also include provisions for roadside tree plantations and is expected to promote industrial development, urban expansion, and regional economic growth. A private developer will be responsible for the maintenance of the expressway for five years post-construction.

The project timeline for land acquisition and construction is estimated at three years.
