Ganga Swells Across Uttar Pradesh, Inundating Ghats In Varanasi And Beyond

The Ganga River continues to swell across Uttar Pradesh, severely impacting low-lying areas, especially in Varanasi where over 80 ghats are submerged, disrupting daily religious rituals and riverside activities.

According to the Central Water Commission's middle Ganga division, water levels in Varanasi rose by 0.7 meters within 24 hours. Earlier this month, continuous heavy rains had already pushed the Ganga above the danger mark, flooding temples and ghats. Locals report that each day, another step of the ghats disappears underwater. Manikarnika Ghat, a key cremation site, is now fully submerged, and nearby temples have been inundated. Similarly, Ram Ghat in Prayagraj has also gone underwater.

In Sambhal, the river is flowing at a critical 177.60 meters, putting at least 36 villages at risk. District Magistrate Dr. Rajender Pensiya said 16 flood control posts and 13 shelter homes have been set up, and flood relief kits are ready. He noted that this is the most severe flood threat since 2010.
