Himachal Weather Alert:  As many as 106 people were killed and damage worth Rs 1,000 crore was caused amid monsoon havoc in Himachal Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms in Chamba, Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur on July 16. Heavy rain was recorded in Shimla, Bilaspur and Solan on Tuesday. As per IMD, showers are likely to continue in Himachal Pradesh till July 21.

Monsoon rains are expected to continue throughout the week. The maximum temperature in the state was recorded at 32.7 degrees Celsius, one or two degrees Celsius lower than the seasonal average.

Himachal Rain: 106 People Killed, 199 Roads Blocked

According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), as many as 106 people were killed and damage worth Rs 1,000 crore was reported in Himachal Pradesh from June 20 to July 15. Heavy rains impacted the lives of people in the state. Out of the 106 deaths reported, 62 were killed in rain-related incidents, such as landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, drowning, electrocution and falls, while 44 people lost their lives in road accidents.

Cloudbursts accounted for 15 deaths, falling from height (tree/rock) 12, drowning 11, flash floods 8, electrocution and snake bites 5 each, and landslides and fires 1 each. Road accidents accounted for 44 deaths across all districts, with Mandi (4), Kullu (7) and Kinnaur (5) being the worst affected.

Amid the monsoon havoc in Himachal Pradesh, 384 houses were completely damaged. 244 shops and 850 cattle shops were also damaged. 171 drinking water schemes are closed in the state, out of which 142 schemes in Mandi district, 18 in Kangra and 11 in Sirmaur are affected.

199 roads, 141 in Mandi district, 35 in Kullu, 10 in Kangra, eight in Sirmaur, three in Una and two in Chamba were closed due to heavy rain and landslides. Restoration work is underway.

Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and apprised him that the state has suffered losses of about Rs 1,000 crore due to flash floods and cloudburst.
