Uttar Pradesh News: Four members of Uttar Pradesh’s junior rowing team were injured after being allegedly attacked by unidentified fishermen during a morning training session, police said on Thursday.
The incident occurred at around 8:00 AM on Wednesday while the athletes were practising during a scheduled practice session, news agency PTI quoted Vikas Pal and Ashok Kumar as saying.
According to the coaches, two unidentified fishermen allegedly approached the team in a boat, physically assaulted rowers Praveen, Harinath, Deepak and Shantanu and also damaged a rowing board. The attackers reportedly hurled abuses and issued death threats before fleeing.

The team is a part of the state’s flagship initiative, launched by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, which aims to train young athletes for the Junior Nationals. The attack has raised concerns about the safety and security of athletes during official training sessions.
Following the incident, a complaint was filed at the Ramgarh Tal police station on Thursday. Speaking to PTI, Station in-charge Nitin Raghunath said, “A case has been registered, assuring that efforts to identify and arrest the culprits are underway.”

The incident has drawn attention to the risks faced by athletes during practice sessions and sparked calls for better protection measures for youth athletes participating in government-run programs.
