UP Crime: A chilling modus operandi has come to light in Uttar Pradesh, where a gang executed a horrific plan to steal cars. Gang members used to book car rides from cab service platforms to get the information about the ownership of the car, and once they confirmed that the car belonged to the driver, they would book another ride and kill the driver to steal the car.

“During the first booking, gang members behaved cordially with the driver, gathered information about whether the car was owned or rented, and learned how it could be tracked. A day later, another member of the gang would book the same cab, lure the driver to a secluded location, and kill him before escaping with the vehicle,” an officer aware of the probe was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.

Additional DCP (west) DS Kushwaha said, “Three arrests have been made so far, while one accused was killed in an encounter on Sunday night. Interrogations reveal that the men were part of a wider racket operating across UP. Further details will be shared as the probe progresses.”

In the past month, authorities have been tracking a gang responsible for at least two similar cases in Sitapur and Shahjahanpur. The suspects were linked to the murder of Lucknow-based cab driver Yogesh Pal, whose body was discovered in Sitapur in September. Shortly after, another cab driver, Avneesh Dixit from Shahjahanpur, was found murdered on October 6, with his vehicle stolen.

Guru Sevak, a gangster carrying a Rs 1.5 lakh reward, was gunned down in a late-night encounter that took place near Zero point on Outer Ring Road on Sunday, after Lucknow police and the Crime Branch traced a network.
