A village in Haryana’s Narnaul, named Antari, has gained limelight after it passed socially progressive rules, including a ban on dowry, ‘mrityu bhoj’ and well worship. The village also imposed a ban on playing DJ music during celebrations. It was collectively decided that if any villager breaks these practices, the entire village will socially boycott them and their family functions.
The decisions were taken in a meeting of villagers from all communities which was headed by the Marketing Committee Chairman Ramakant Shankar, jagran.com reported. Various aspects of social reform were discussed in depth and strict guidelines were laid out in the meeting. The village panchayat further said that strict actions will be taken against the people who violate the laws decided in the meeting.
What Decisions Were Taken In Meeting?
The villagers decided collectively on the following issues:
- A decision was taken to completely ban DJ music during festivals and marriages to maintain peace and order in the village.
- Funeral feasts and worship of the well were prohibited to prevent wasteful expenditure.
- While discussing the wasteful expenditure incurred in girls’ weddings, the villagers reached a consensus to marry girls for just one rupee.
- A decision was also passed to have a dowry-free wedding, except for essential items.
- Speakers present in the meeting said that the society is now demanding a change and wasteful expenditure by families should be directed towards children’s education so that the village, society and family can progress.
- All the people present in the village agreed to the decision and those violating the rules will be termed outcasts according to the panchayat.
