The UP government is set to construct 35 new cow protection centres (go sanrakshan kendras) across 16 districts in the state. The government has released Rs 56.04 crore for the project, following which the Livestock Department has issued instructions to begin the work soon.
The Yogi government has been prioritising cow protection since its first term. To this end, more than 7,700 cow shelters (go ashray sthals) have been established to date, housing over 12,50,000 stray cattle.
In the budget for the current financial year, the government made a provision of Rs 2,000 crore for the protection of stray cattle. The construction cost for one large cow shelter has been increased to Rs 1.60 crore.
As part of the effort to provide shelter for every stray animal, approval has been granted for 560 large cow protection centres. Of these, the construction of 403 centres has been completed, and 387 have also become operational.

The shelters are set to be built in the villages of Mudigawan, Rawatparu, Khulauli, Dhanri, and Dasiya in Shahjahanpur; Mau in Ayodhya; Dakkhinpur and Kathaura in Amethi; Bhitaulikhas in Barabanki; Semari and Gaje in Deoria; Hariharpur in Gorakhpur; Sheikhpur in Hapur; Kondu in Bulandshahr; Tendua, Bhahpur, Balamau, Gujrai, and Madarpur in Hardoi; Vinayakpur and Bannawa in Raebareli; Raisenpur, Para I, Para II, and Para-2 in Sitapur; Barhauta-7 and Barhauta-8 in Mathura; Jhala Tarhar-2, Jhala Tarhar-3, and Semrahana-2 in Bahraich; Sukwa-2 in Jhansi; Bhaursil-2 and Pipariya in Lalitpur; and Nyamatpur in Jalaun.
