In a major push to enhance connectivity and ease transportation for citizens, the Uttar Pradesh government has set an ambitious target to complete the construction of 224 bridges across 10 divisions within the next nine months. The Public Works Department (PWD) has finalised a comprehensive plan to expedite the completion of 116 river bridges, 96 rail overbridges, 12 flyovers, and 13 additional infrastructure projects.
The Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation has been entrusted with the execution of these projects, which are collectively valued at Rs 16,967 crore. The construction spans key divisions including Agra, Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Bareilly, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, and Varanasi.

According to officials, 61 bridges are in the advanced stages of completion, with 75 per cent to 99 per cent of the work already finished. However, construction progress on 93 bridges remains slow. Among these, 60 bridges are currently between 51 per cent and 75 per cent complete, while 33 bridges are at only 26 per cent to 50 per cent completion.
Priority is being given to the 116 river bridges, considered critical for regional connectivity. Additionally, the government is aiming to finish the construction of 12 flyovers, being built at Rs 1,540 crore, within the stipulated timeframe.
According to the division-wise project allocation, 47 projects are underway in the Lucknow division, followed by 38 in Ghaziabad, 26 each in Kanpur and Ayodhya, 24 in Gorakhpur, 23 in Agra, 22 in Varanasi, 13 in Bareilly, 10 in Prayagraj, and 8 in Azamgarh. The PWD is closely monitoring the pace of work to ensure the timely completion of all projects.
