The Uttar Pradesh government has officially implemented a one per cent increase in the one-time road tax on private four-wheeler vehicles. The order, based on a cabinet decision, came into effect on Monday.

Two-wheeler owners have been given some relief, with no change in the seven per cent tax for vehicles under Rs 40,000. The 10 per cent tax rate for two-wheelers above Rs 40,000 also remains unchanged, despite an earlier proposal to increase it to 11 per cent.

AC four-wheelers costing up to Rs 10 lakh will now be taxed at nine per cent, while non-AC variants in the same price range will face an 8 per cent tax. Vehicles exceeding Rs 10 lakh, both AC and non-AC, will be subject to an 11 per cent tax.

Trailers will incur a 2 per cent road tax. This is the first road tax hike for private vehicles since 2015, implemented through changes in the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicle Taxation Act-1997. The increase is expected to generate an additional annual revenue of Rs 413 crore for the transport department.
