In a bid to enhance farmers' income, the Uttar Pradesh government has rolled out a new strategy to boost the production of Kharif crops. The government has set an ambitious target of a 12 per cent increase in the production of food grains and oilseeds. The initiative also includes the construction of small ponds across 8,500 fields to promote water conservation, with clear instructions issued to divisional commissioners and district magistrates for implementation.
For Kharif 2024, the state's food grain and oilseed crop production reached 260 lakh metric tonnes. The government aims to increase this figure to 293 lakh metric tonnes. Special focus will be placed on boosting maize production in terms of yield and expanding the area under paddy cultivation.

As part of the revamped strategy, the government has made changes in crop sowing, maintenance, and irrigation practices. Divisional commissioners and district magistrates have been tasked with ensuring that farmers have access to quality seeds, timely fertilisers, and adequate irrigation. Agricultural officers will also provide technical training to farmers to help them adopt better practices.
The Khet Talab Yojana, aimed at addressing water shortages and providing alternative irrigation sources, will be implemented statewide. Under the National Agricultural Development Scheme, a total of 8,499 small farm ponds will be constructed in 2025-26. These farm ponds, which serve as small reservoirs to store rainwater, will not only aid in irrigation but also support livestock watering and fish farming, particularly in areas with irregular rainfall.
Farmers will be able to register for this scheme online, allowing them to benefit from enhanced irrigation infrastructure and improved crop production.
