Azam Khan Security: The security cover of Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Mohammad Azam Khan has been put under scrutiny after his conviction in a case related to obtaining two birth certificates for his son. Khan was granted Y-category security cover by the state government before his conviction, which was withdrawn after he was sentenced to imprisonment.

District-Level Security Arrangement

Following his release on bail from the Allahabad High Court, Khan's Y-category security cover has been restored. However, the state government has initiated a fresh review of the security arrangements in light of his conviction. The district administration has also been alerted, and a report has been sought from the intelligence department.

What Is Y-Category Security

Azam Khan, a four-time minister and 10-time MLA, was granted Y-category security cover during the previous government. This category of security provides protection with 8-11 personnel, including commandos and police officers. It is typically accorded to individuals facing a moderate threat to their lives.

What Is District Level Security Protocol

According to SSP Vidya Sagar Mishra, a security committee at the district level decides on providing security cover to individuals, which can be granted for up to 15 days. This can be extended for another 15 days, and further extensions are decided by a divisional-level committee. For security covers beyond three months, the decision is taken at the government level.

The government is likely to take a final decision on Khan's security cover after considering the report from the intelligence department.
