In a significant step toward enhancing forest and wildlife protection, the Uttar Pradesh government has formulated an action plan to modernise the state’s forest police force using information technology and artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative aims to strengthen forest conservation, improve management, and curb wildlife-related crimes through advanced monitoring and real-time data analysis.
According to officials, the Forest and Wildlife Department will equip the forest police with modern technologies such as sensor-based surveillance cameras, GPS tracking devices, drones, GIS mapping tools, and satellite imaging systems. The plan includes the establishment of a centralised command and control center that will serve as the nerve center for real-time forest monitoring and integrated forest management.
The move is expected to provide a robust response to challenges such as illegal tree felling, wildlife smuggling, and increasing human-wildlife conflicts in sensitive zones across the state. Through sensor-enabled and AI-integrated systems, the government aims to automate monitoring, gather data on forest activity, and enable faster intervention in case of illegal activities, forest fires, or unusual animal movements.
A senior official from the Forest Department stated that the centralised command center will monitor forest areas, tiger reserves, national parks, and safaris via digital systems and collect critical data for surveillance and planning. This will help authorities make data-driven decisions to tackle both short-term emergencies and long-term conservation challenges.
The system will also allow for AI and machine learning-based analysis to detect patterns in environmental changes and wildlife behavior. The insights gathered will assist in formulating scientific conservation strategies and tracking the impact of climate change and human activities on biodiversity.
