A disturbing case of love turned tragic unfolded in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj district when a young man sneaked into his girlfriend’s home through the roof and fatally shot her while she was asleep. The shocking incident occurred around 4 AM on Monday, June 23, in Sultanpur village under Saurikh police station. After killing her, the man died by suicide.

The accused, 23-year-old Devansh Yadav, reportedly used his father’s licensed 12-bore single-barrel gun to commit the crime. He entered the house by climbing onto the roof and made his way to the room where his girlfriend, 21-year-old Deepti, was sleeping beside her younger sister. Without hesitation, he shot her in the head and then fled to a nearby pond where he turned the gun on himself.

Devansh, a resident of Kuthla village, was the son of Mahipal Singh Yadav, a retired army man. He had studied up to Class 12 and worked on his family’s farmland. Deepti was pursuing her final year of a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. Her father, Ashok Pal, is employed as a lineman with the electricity department and is currently posted in Talgram.

The couple had reportedly been in a relationship for some time. However, once Deepti's family came to know about it, they decided to arrange her marriage elsewhere. She was engaged to a man from Chitta village in Auraiya district, who worked at a private clinic in Talgram.

Upon learning about her engagement, Devansh allegedly confronted her fiance in Talgram and issued threats. According to reports, he told him not to go ahead with the marriage.

This confrontation escalated tensions, leading to involvement from both families. A panchayat was organised on Sunday in Nagla Bhaju village to address the matter. All parties, including the groom-to-be, were present. At the meeting, Devansh reportedly apologised and assured everyone that he would cease all contact with Deepti. The families believed the matter had been peacefully resolved.

However, just hours later, Devansh took his father's gun, travelled to Sultanpur, and executed the brutal attack. After shooting Deepti, he walked to a nearby pond and died by suicide using the same firearm.

Kannauj Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar, ASP Ajay Kumar, and other officials visited the scene following the incident. The weapon and bullet casings were recovered by the police, and a case has been registered. Authorities have launched a manhunt as Devansh’s family members have gone missing since the incident.

Deepti is survived by her younger brother and sister. Devansh also leaves behind two brothers and two sisters.
