In a major push to align vocational training with modern industry requirements, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced the upgradation of 1,000 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state. The move aims to replace outdated machinery and courses with advanced training programs that meet current industry standards.
Under this initiative, National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) will also be established with support from global partners. The state’s ITIs will be connected through a ‘hub and spoke’ model, where major ITIs will serve as hubs, providing modern equipment, skilled instructors, and industry collaboration to smaller nearby institutes.

The program will be implemented under the Central Government’s schemes - the National Scheme for Upgradation of Industrial Training Institutes and National Centres of Excellence for Skilling.
A state-level steering committee has been formed to oversee the project, chaired by the Chief Secretary and with the Principal Secretary of the Department of Vocational Education, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship as member secretary.
The committee also includes officials from Technical Education, Industrial Development, Finance, MSME, Labour, and Higher Education departments. Industry bodies such as ASSOCHAM, FICCI, and IIA, along with vocational training experts, will participate to ensure courses are designed according to industry needs.
According to Principal Secretary Dr Hariom, the upgraded ITIs will provide students with hands-on experience on modern machinery and technology. Training will be directly linked to industry requirements, increasing employability, and offering opportunities for internships and on-the-job training in companies. The initiative is expected to create a skilled workforce in the state, boosting industrial growth and enhancing career prospects for youth.
