World Environment Day in Uttar Pradesh will witness active participation and Uttar Pradesh will mark this year’s World Environment Day on June 5 with a special focus on children and youth, launching a state-wide campaign themed ‘Ending Plastic Globally’.
The initiative will include awareness programs, competitions, and nature conservation drives across schools and public spaces, aiming to combat plastic pollution and instill environmental consciousness.
The main state-level program, organised by the Environment Department, will take place at the Regional Science Center in Aliganj, Lucknow. It will bring together schoolchildren, teachers, environmental experts, and voluntary organisations.
Children will take center stage in this campaign, performing street plays to show how plastic waste is harming rivers and soil, and participating in speech competitions to share ideas on reducing plastic use in daily life.
The Directorate of Environment has issued instructions to all District Magistrates to organise similar awareness drives in collaboration with local schools and institutions. Activities such as street plays, speeches, and painting contests will be conducted in each district to maximise student engagement.
Beyond plastic awareness, the campaign will also emphasise increasing green cover. A plantation drive will be held in schools and public spaces, with children being encouraged not only to plant trees but to take responsibility for nurturing them.
Environment Director Sushant Sharma said the June 5 campaign will focus on making the younger generation aware of the importance of building a plastic-free society. “Through creative competitions and hands-on activities, we aim to inspire long-term environmental responsibility,” he added.
