A man and his family have been booked for allegedly harassing his wife over dowry and pronouncing triple talaq via WhatsApp in Basera village of Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district on Monday. The victim, Asma, lodged a complaint against her husband Hasan, her mother-in-law Rashida, and two brothers-in-law, Salim and Shakir.

"An FIR was registered on Sunday under relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. Police are on the lookout for the accused," Circle Officer (CO) Ravishankar said.

According to her complaint, the victim married Hasan in November 2017 and was soon subjected to persistent dowry demands and harassment. Unable to endure the abuse, she moved back to her parents’ home. On March 31, 2025, Hasan allegedly pronounced triple talaq through a WhatsApp message, an act illegal under Indian law. The FIR was registered after her complaint reached the police, and an investigation is underway.

In a separate incident, a man from Maharashtra’s Thane district has been booked for allegedly giving ‘triple talaq’ (instant divorce) to his wife, physically assaulting her, and harassing her for money, police said on Monday. The 26-year-old woman, who lived with her husband’s family in Bhiwandi, stated in her complaint that she had been subjected to harassment since March 2022. She claimed her husband and in-laws demanded Rs 50,000 as dowry, tied her hands and legs before beating her, and threatened to kill her.

According to police, the husband later annulled the marriage through ‘triple talaq,’ which has been banned since 2019. A case was registered on Saturday at Shanti Nagar police station against the man, his mother, two sisters, and a brother-in-law under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.

What Is Triple Talaq Law

It is important to note that instant triple talaq, or talaq-e-biddat, was declared unconstitutional and banned in India in 2019. Under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, pronouncing instant triple talaq in any form, spoken, written, or electronic, is a punishable offence, carrying up to three years of imprisonment and a fine. The legislation was introduced to safeguard Muslim women from arbitrary divorce practices.
