In a startling incident, four women delivered babies under the light of mobile phones in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district. According to the officials the incident took place at a government health centre in Beruarbari, which is located 12 km from the district headquarters. The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) has ordered an inquiry into the matter assuring strict action.
According to the information, the CMO has formed a three-member probe committee which will be led by the deputy chief medical officer (DCMO) to investigate the incident.
Speaking about the incident, CMO Dr Sanjeev Barman said that they received the information through media reports alleging that four pregnant women underwent delivery under the mobile phone lights on Monday night at the government health centre in Beruarbari.
According to CMO Barman, the transformer was burned out three days prior due to which the power supply was disrupted at the health centre. However, the generators and diesel were available at the centre which could have been used for the procedure in an emergency. Therefore, the priliminary finding demand thorough investigation.
Talking to the media, CMO Barman said, "The preliminary findings suggest this occurred because the transformer at the Beruarbari Primary Health Centre (PHC) had burned out three days prior. This happened despite the fact that a generator and diesel were available at the health centre."
The women who allegedly underwent the delivery procedure have been identified as Neetu Devi, wife of Raju Sahni from Rajpur; Manju Devi, wife of Mithun from Achhoohi; Pinky Devi, wife of Chandrama Rajbhar from Adar; and Razia Khatoon, wife of Akhtar Ali from Apayal.
CMO Barman assured that strict action would be taken against all who will be found guilty in the matter once the thorough inquiry report is received.
