UPPCL Update: Amid heavy protest, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited on Monday paved the way for privatisation of two mega power corporations. The corporation has appointed a transaction advisor to proceed with the works of privatisation of Purvanchal and Dakshinanchal Electricity Distribution Corporations. It stated that both of the mega BESCOMs will work in the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The move from the corporation has sparked a controversy among the power employees of the state. Employees even held a protest meeting and announced an agitation against the latest developments. The employees protested under the banner of the UP Vidyut Karmchari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti by wearing black armbands. The employees criticised the corporation by pointing out that it was a “pre-decided agenda” to sell all the public assets to private companies.
The employees stated that the tender notice mentioned privatisation, which, according to them, has contradicted what the authorities promised earlier. Samiti convenor Shailendra Dubey stated that the tender was deliberately released on the day Mahakumbh began.
“UPPCL management is creating unrest deliberately. The tender notice was published on the day the Mahakumbh began, an event heavily reliant on uninterrupted power supply,” Dubey was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times. He further claimed that this was disrespectful to the employees who were working tirelessly to provide electricity to the people.
Besides, UP Rajya Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad chairman Awadhesh Kumar Verma stated that the corporation had no rights to release the tender and termed it as “illegal”. “The Regulatory Affairs Unit of the Power Corporation, which filed the Annual Revenue Requirement (ARR) for power companies for the year 2025-26, is the same wing that issued the advertisement for appointing a transaction advisor to sell both power companies. This move is contradictory and unconstitutional,” he was quoted as saying by the HT.
The Uttar Pradesh government earlier assured that there will be no changes in the employees' policy even if the PPP model comes into enforcement.
