A team of the police and the Special Operations Group (SOG) gunned down a wanted criminal, Shaitan (alias Iftikhar, alias Soldier), carrying a bounty of Rs 1 lakh, in an encounter near Bilwa bridge on Nainital Road early on Thursday morning. An SOG constable, Rahul, was also injured during the exchange of fire.

The deceased dacoit had 19 cases registered against him across seven districts. He was wanted in a dacoity case at the BithriChainpur police station. He was also involved in a 2006 dacoity that included the murder of a priest at the Pachomi temple in Faridpur. In 2012, he had escaped from police custody in Barabanki and was apprehended eight years later.

Police recovered one pistol, two magazines, 17 cartridges, Rs 28,000 in cash, a mobile phone and a motorcycle from his possession. One of his accomplices managed to flee the scene.

Used To Evade Police by Changing Names

Shaitan, who frequently changed his name to evade the police, was originally a resident of Bari Chowk on Kadarganj Road in Kasganj. He was currently living in Jagat Batta village near Tila Mod, under the Bhupkhedi police station area in Ghaziabad.
