Uttar Pradesh Electricity Bill: Uttar Pradesh residents will see a rise in electricity bills from June as power distribution companies are set to apply a 4.27 percent fuel surcharge. This additional charge will reflect in next month's bill and is expected to generate around Rs 390 crore in extra revenue for the companies.

The surcharge has been approved under the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission’s Multi-Year Tariff Regulation-2025, which allows companies to adjust the Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPAS) every month. Since the implementation of this rule in January, electricity rates have been fluctuating across the state based on monthly fuel costs.

Uttar Pradesh Fluctuating Tariffs In April and May

In April, electricity became costlier by 1.24 percent due to fuel costs from January. In contrast, May saw a 2 per cent reduction in bills based on February’s lower expenditure. Now, for June, the increased surcharge has been calculated based on power purchase expenses made in March.

Uttar Pradesh Electricity Bill: 30 per cent Hike Also Proposed in Coming Months

Currently, the state has around 3.45 crore electricity consumers. The ongoing process for finalising the tariff for the current financial year could bring further increases—possibly up to 30 per cent—in the next two to three months, as per the proposed rates.

From June onwards, electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh will notice a 4.27 per cent rise in their power bills. This means households and businesses will have to pay more than usual in their upcoming electricity bills. For many consumers, the monthly cost may increase by several hundred rupees depending on their usage. The surcharge is expected to bring in an additional Rs 390 crore for the power companies, which will reflect in the June billing cycle.

Uttar Pradesh Consumer Council Opposes The Hike

However, this latest hike has sparked criticism. The Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Consumer Council has strongly objected to the surcharge increase. Council President Awadhesh Verma argued that the rise is unjustified, claiming that power companies already hold a surplus of Rs 33,122 crore collected from consumers.

Demand To Adjust Hike From Surplus Funds

Verma believes that instead of imposing additional charges, the power companies should have adjusted the Rs 390 crore fuel surcharge from the existing surplus. He added that this issue would be raised before the Commission and demanded a cut in electricity rates instead of an increase.

The final decision on the larger proposed tariff revision is still awaited, but the immediate fuel surcharge for June has already been approved and will be added to all electricity bills across the state.
