Government-run primary and upper primary schools in Uttar Pradesh will remain open this summer as selected schools across all blocks will host summer camps. These camps, scheduled from May 20 to June 15, will run for one and a half hours each morning, considering the summer temperatures. The Block Education Officers (BEO) and Basic Education Officers (BSA) will oversee the smooth organisation of these camps.

The summer camps will not only focus on academics but also aim to nurture students' talents through various activities. Students will engage in subjects such as life skills, personality development, yoga, sports, science and technology-based experiments, art and cultural programs and environmental awareness. Additionally, children from nearby schools will also be allowed to participate.

A budget of Rs 200 crore has been allocated by the government to support these initiatives. Schools hosting summer camps will provide nutritious food items under the mid-day meal scheme, including jaggery chikki, millet laddus and jaggery-chana. Shiksha Mitras and instructors, alongside regular teachers, will facilitate creative learning sessions for students.

RTE Free Admission: Over 4.17 Lakh Seats Remain Vacant in Private Schools

Meanwhile, despite an increase in admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, a significant number of free seats in private schools remain vacant. Out of 46,526 applicants in the fourth and final phase for pre-primary and class one admissions, only 28,204 were allotted seats. Overall, 1,85,675 children from economically weaker sections have secured free admission this year, reported Jagran.com.

However, out of 6,03,065 total seats in 62,871 private schools, 4,17,390 remain unfilled. Though the admission rate has improved over the past four years, filling all available seats remains a challenge.
