The Yogi Adityanath government has initiated a major step to save the lives of heart attack patients by providing a life-saving injection worth Rs 40,000 free of cost at district hospitals and community health centres. The injection, earlier available only at select medical institutions, will now be administered free at all medical colleges, district hospitals, and major CHCs.
On the market, the injection, Tenecteplase or Streptokinase, costs between Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000. The Health Department has directed all Chief Medical Officers to ensure the immediate availability of these injections. Officials say that delays in transporting heart attack patients to cardiology departments often put lives at risk. To prevent this, emergency departments will now administer the injection without delay, followed by referral to super-speciality hospitals.

The government has already made the injection available at KGMU, Lohia Institute, SGPGI, BHU Varanasi, the Institute of Medical Sciences in Saifai, AMU, and MLN Medical College in Prayagraj, under the hub-and-spoke model. Supplies have now begun reaching district hospitals, with instructions to stock them at high-footfall CHCs as well.
Director-General of Medical and Health, Dr Ratanpal Singh Suman, said CMOs have been instructed to maintain adequate stocks of Tenecteplase or Streptokinase. Administering the injection in time can prevent patients from slipping into a critical condition after a heart attack.
