UP Voter List SIR: Women Voters Drop Sharply, Gender Ratio Falls From 877 To 824

Surprising figures have emerged from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in UP. Before the SIR, the number of women per 1,000 men on the state's electoral roll was 877, which has decreased to 824 in the draft voter list published under the SIR. 

The highest number of names removed during the SIR was those of women. Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa stated that before the SIR, there were over 71.18 lakh women aged 25 and above in the state whose father's name was registered alongside their own on the voter list. The names of 42.13 lakh such women have been removed.

It is believed that these women were registered in two places - at their parental home (mayke) and their marital home (sasural) - and after the SIR, their names now remain in only one location. Before the SIR, there were over 4.16 crore voters in urban areas; 2.99 crore voters remain in urban areas. 

The names of 1.17 crore voters, or 28 per cent, have been removed from urban areas. In rural areas, there were 11.28 lakh voters before the SIR, which has decreased to 9.56 crore in the draft voter list. The number of voters in rural areas has decreased by 1.72 crore, or 15.23 per cent. 

Regarding the higher number of names in the voter list for the three-tier Panchayat elections compared to the number of rural voters in the draft list, Rinwa said that many names will be added to the SIR list after notices are issued, and correct information will be available thereafter. 

According to the draft voter list, there are 5.67 crore women and 6.46 crore male voters in the state. In this regard, the Sahibabad assembly constituency ranks first in terms of the decrease in the number of women per thousand men. 

In this constituency, before the SIR, there were 779 women per 1,000 men on the voter list, which has now decreased to 649. A reduction of 135 in the number of women per 1,000 men has been recorded here.

Under the SIR, there are 2.32 crore voters in cases related to discrepancies (logical errors) in names, ages, etc. Notices will be sent to all of them. Notices will also be sent to the 1.04 crore voters whose records could not be matched with the 2003 voter list. 

Thus, a total of 3.26 crore voters will be sent notices. In this matter, the first hearing in all 403 assembly constituencies will be held on January 21. These hearings will be conducted at 3,793 locations. Over 403 Electoral Registration Officers and 8,751 Assistant Electoral Registration Officers will conduct the hearings.
