A 35-year-old woman, mother of two children, in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, jumped from the roof of her second-floor house after her husband dared her to do so. She suffered several injuries and was admitted to the hospital soon after the incident. The matter came to light after a video of the incident, recorded by a neighbour, went viral online.

The incident occurred on August 1 in Daunkoli village of Gonda block. Archana, 35, allegedly jumped from the second floor in a state of fear and panic. Though she survived the fall, she was reportedly beaten by her in-laws afterward, sustaining multiple fractures. She is currently receiving treatment at a government hospital.

UP Woman Jumps Off Roof Video  

The case came to public attention when a 38-second video, reportedly recorded by a neighbour, surfaced on social media Tuesday evening. The footage shows a woman in a saree with her head veiled standing on the terrace before jumping. She is seen lying unconscious in the courtyard while her in-laws allegedly assault her. Two children can be heard crying, “Mummy, mummy.”

Following the incident, police registered a case against five members of her in-laws’ family, including her husband. The accused are currently absconding. Authorities said further information on Archana’s condition will be available after the full medical report is received.

Police Statement 

Area Officer Iglas Shri Mahesh Kumar said, “A case of a woman jumping from the roof has come to light in village Dakauli under the area. On enquiring about the above case, it has been found that the said woman had a dispute with her husband. Hurt by this dispute and on being instigated by her husband, this woman jumped from the roof. The woman has been admitted to the hospital and a medical examination has been done. On the basis of the complaint given by the woman, a case has been registered under relevant sections. There is peace at the spot.”

Dowry Harassment 

Archana, married to Sonu six years ago, has two children aged four and two. Her family spent nearly Rs 10 lakh on the wedding, but her in-laws were reportedly unhappy with the dowry, demanding an additional Rs 5 lakh and a Royal Enfield motorcycle. According to her family, Archana faced mental and physical torture over these demands. In a police complaint, her brother Ankit also alleged that Sonu’s brother, Pramod, had been sexually harassing her, and when she reported it to Sonu and his mother, Nehni Devi, they instructed her to remain silent.

"On September 1, her in-laws threatened to kill my sisters' children. My sister said she would jump off the roof. And they egged her on. A neighbour shot a video and sent it to us. My sister's in-laws tortured her mentally and drove her to the edge. She has suffered serious injuries," Archana's brother has said in the complaint.

A further investigation into the matter is underway, with officials also trying to determine who recorded the video and shared it online.
