In a shocking incident, a woman was found alive two years after a dowry-death case was filed against her husband and in-laws in Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya district.

The case dates back to 2023, when the 20-year-old woman went missing from her marital home in Auraiya. After initial searches, she was nowhere to be found and eventually, a missing person's case was registered on October 23, 2023.

After extensive searches yielded no result and she was not found, her family accused the husband and in-laws of killing her for dowry.

Dowry Death case on court order

Later, on the order of the court, a case was registered against her husband and six in-laws. They were booked under Section 304B of the Indian Penal Code, which relates to dowry deaths.

The case proceedings were on for the last two years under the Special Operations Group and surveillance teams of the Uttar Pradesh police.

The said teams traced the woman to Madhya Pradesh. She was brought back to Auraiya on Wednesday, and further investigation is underway.

Speaking about the development in the case, Auraiya Circle Officer Ashok Kumar Singh said that the woman had fled the home one and a half years after the marriage and was traced to Madhya Pradesh.

He said, "The woman went missing a year and a half after she got married. A missing person's complaint was filed by her family and then, on the court's direction, a case was registered against the husband and some of her in-laws."

The officials said that the investigators are now trying to figure out why she fled from her maternal home and what she was doing in Madhya Pradesh. The police are also trying to find out why she did not contact her family or in-laws during the two-year time.
