UPPCL Power Rate Hike: The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited has proposed a steep hike in electricity tariffs, which is pending approval from the Electricity Regulatory Commission. Under the proposal, rural consumers would pay Rs 8 per unit, while urban consumers could be charged up to Rs 9 per unit.

Fixed charges are also set to increase significantly. For urban consumers, the rate may rise from Rs 110 to Rs 190 per kilowatt, and for rural consumers, from Rs 90 to Rs 150 per kilowatt. As a result, total electricity costs could reach Rs 12–Rs 13 per unit in some cases.

The Power Corporation has submitted this proposal citing a projected loss of Rs 19,644 crore for the 2025–26 financial year under current electricity rates. The proposal seeks an average 30% hike in tariffs to offset this shortfall.

The UPPCL has proposed a steep hike of 35% to 45% in electricity tariffs for both rural and urban domestic consumers. A key change in the proposal includes reducing the current four-tier slab system to three, which could result in some consumers facing an increase of over 45% in their electricity bills.

For households using more than 300 units, rural tariffs are proposed to rise from Rs 5.50 to Rs 8 per unit, while urban rates may increase from Rs 6.50 to Rs 9 per unit.

The proposal also affects Below Poverty Line (BPL) consumers. Currently, BPL households are charged Rs 3 per unit for up to 100 units of consumption. This rate is proposed to increase to Rs 4 per unit, with the fixed charge rising from Rs 50 to Rs 75.
