The UP government’s ambitious Zero Poverty campaign has achieved significant progress within 10 months of its launch, setting a new precedent in poverty eradication efforts. Till August 2025, 13.32 lakh of the state’s poorest families have been identified, of which over 3.72 lakh families have already begun receiving direct benefits under government schemes.
The campaign aims to make the state completely poverty-free by 2027.Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had first announced the initiative on Independence Day last year, with the formal launch taking place on October 2, 2024.
As part of the campaign, 25 poor families from each gram panchayat are being identified and assisted to rise above the poverty line. These families are being linked with essential services, including employment, livelihood opportunities, housing, health care, and education.
The identification drive has been carried out across the state, with Azamgarh recording the highest number of poor families (42,082), followed by Jaunpur (39,374), Sitapur (36,571), Hardoi (30,050), and Prayagraj (28,935). Local panchayats and voluntary organisations are working alongside the government to extend scheme benefits to the maximum number of families.
Beneficiaries are being connected with flagship programmes such as the Pradhan Mantri and Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Ujjwala Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, and MGNREGA. The campaign also emphasises education for children and women’s empowerment through self-help groups.
Officials said the initiative goes beyond financial aid, aiming for a sustainable improvement in living standards. The strategy focuses on data-driven tracking, regular monitoring, and transparency at the grassroots level to ensure lasting impact.
