A gangster from Bijnor, Asif, was injured after being shot in the leg during an encounter with Sigra police on Saturday night. He was apprehended along with his friend, Zeeshan.
The incident occurred after Sigra police received a tip-off and cordoned off the area under the Lahartara overbridge. Asif and Zeeshan, who were travelling by motorbike, panicked upon seeing the police. While attempting to flee, the criminals opened fire on the police team. Police returned fire, injuring Asif, and subsequently captured both men.
ACP Dr Ishan Sony stated that the injured criminal, Asif, is a resident of Village Rehra, Post Heempur Deepa, Police Station Heempur Deepa, in the Bijnor district. His friend, Zeeshan, is a resident of Hari Singh ka Bhogla, Police Station Raipur, also in the Bijnor district.
According to the ACP, both criminals commit incidents of drugging and robbing (zeherkhurani) and theft by distraction in Varanasi and the surrounding districts. A case is also registered against both at the Sigra police station. The criminals had reportedly come to the area with the intention of carrying out an offence but were unsuccessful.

The police team included Sigra Station House Officer Sanjay Mishra and Roadways Outpost In-charge Kumar Gaurav Singh.
