Gangster Vinod Upadhyay died on Friday while he was undergoing treatment after an encounter with Special Task Force (STF) in Sultanpur. Vinod Upadhyay was one of the most wanted gangsters by the Uttar Pradesh Police as he was accused of 35 cases of kidnapping, ransom and murder.
Upadhyay, a big name in the world of crime, was ranked among the top 10 criminals in the district and 61st on the list of the top mafia of Uttar Pradesh. He was on the run for eight months after a case of extortion and forgery was registered against him in Gorakhpur. He also had a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head.
Vinod Upadhyay was a resident of Maya Bazar in Ayodhya district, he joined the world of crime after coming in contact with the infamous mafia Prakash Shukla. Upadhyay met with a similar fate as his mentor Prakash Shukla, who was also killed in an encounter by the UP Police.

Upadhyay had established his base in Mogalha of Gulriha in Gorakhpur, where he operated with his brother and associates. The police had intensified their search for him after the ADG Zone increased the reward on him from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh in September.
The STF team, led by Dy SP Deepak Kumar Singh, tracked him down to the Dehat Kotwali area of Sultanpur and engaged him in a gunfight. He was critically injured and succumbed to his wounds during his treatment at a hospital.
