Even though there's still a year and a half left for the assembly elections in Uttarakhand, whispers have already started in political circles about whether the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) can win for a third consecutive time.
During Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's term of about three and a half years, the BJP has achieved impressive victories in every election, from the national Lok Sabha elections and state by-elections to the local city and village (panchayat) polls. In this period, he has prioritized the party's core agenda, making several major decisions and turning them into law.
Because of this growing trust in Dhami, a reshuffle and expansion of the state cabinet has been given the green light. On the strength of this trust, the party's top leadership has already decided to go into the next assembly election with Dhami as their leader.
The BJP has already started preparing its groundwork for 'Mission 2027'. The party's morale is high after recent wins in the city and village elections. Seeing the support from both urban and then rural voters, these local elections were considered a 'semi-final' before the main showdown of the assembly elections.
The ruling party's strategy was to prevent its main rival, the Congress party, from even getting into a close fight, and they succeeded. Congress couldn't win a single one of the 11 municipal corporations and had to be content with just one out of the 12 district panchayat president seats. BJP's strategists see this as a huge advantage.

Chief Minister Dhami himself was at the center of this entire strategy. His list of achievements also includes winning all five Lok Sabha seats in the state in 2024 and winning three out of five assembly by-elections. The excellent coordination between the government and the party organization has strengthened stability in the state, sending an important message from the party's top leaders. The reappointment of Mahendra Bhatt for a second term as state president is also seen as a reflection of the leadership's faith in Dhami.
As Chief Minister, Dhami has prioritized meeting the expectations of the top leadership and has made 'solution through simplification' the core principle of his governance. From the Silkyara tunnel collapse to various other disasters, Dhami took charge by personally reaching the crisis spot every time. Whether it was bringing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) into law, creating a strict anti-conversion law, or recovering the cost of damages to government property from rioters, the Dhami government has consistently pushed the BJP's core agenda forward.
Dhami has put all his energy into living up to the party's expectations, and in return, the top leadership has maintained its full faith in him.
