Heavy rain continued to pour across the district for the second straight day on Tuesday. This caused flooding in city areas, while landslides in the hilly and rural parts have blocked many roads.
Due to these landslides and debris, one national highway and 29 village roads are still closed to traffic. However, the District Magistrate (DM), Savin Bansal, is keeping a close watch on the situation and has ordered officials to work on a war footing to get the roads reopened as fast as possible.
In a public announcement on Tuesday, DM Savin Bansal said that the Ganga river in the Triveni Ghat area of Rishikesh is now flowing above the danger level. Because of this, the police and local administration have been put on high alert and told to be ready for any emergency. People are being advised to stay away from areas near the river and move to safer places.
The severe rain also caused a landslide that has stopped traffic on the Tyuni-Chakrata-Rota Khadd road. Work is being done to clear it as soon as possible. Similarly, 29 other roads in rural areas are still closed. The departments in charge of village roads (PMGSY) and public works (PWD) have been instructed to open these routes immediately.
Meanwhile, 106 complaints about flooding were received from city areas, and special teams quickly fixed 104 of those problems. The DM also added that several teams, led by different officials, are using 17 water pumps to clear the water from the flooded areas.
