Visitors at the Dehradun Zoo, also known as Malsi Deer Park, will soon have the opportunity to see a white tiger. The decision to acquire the animal was finalised during a Zoo Board meeting held on the Malsi premises, with a timeline of two months set for completing the process.

The proposal, which has generated excitement among wildlife enthusiasts, involves an exchange with Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha. Under the plan, the Uttarakhand government will provide four leopards in return for the white tiger. This exchange is subject to final approval from the Central Zoo Authority.

The meeting, chaired by Principal Forest Secretary RK Sudhanshu, emphasised the need for meticulous preparations for the new animal. Special consideration was given to ensuring adequate security, health facilities, housing, and other specialised care measures for the white tiger, including a suitable, eco-friendly habitat.

Zoo Modernisation And Enhanced Visitor Facilities

Alongside the white tiger acquisition, the board also approved a series of measures to modernise the zoo and improve visitor convenience. The upcoming enhancements include:

  • Construction of a multi-level parking facility and new toilets.
  • Implementation of a QR code-based system for ticketing and payments.
  • An automated parking system and a visitor feedback mechanism.
  • Establishment of a souvenir shop and other aesthetic upgrades.
