A big step has been taken to fix the traffic situation in Dehradun and to better manage its city buses, especially the new electric ones. The state government has approved the creation of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) called Dehradun City Transport.
Currently, the capital city of Dehradun is struggling with a chaotic traffic problem. There are frequent jams at intersections and on main roads, because there is no solid control over commercial transport vehicles. This new SPV is being formed to solve this problem and plan for the future.
This move is also important because the city already has 30 electric buses from the Smart City project and is set to receive 100 more under the Prime Minister's e-bus scheme. Charging stations for these buses are also being set up. A dedicated organisation was needed to properly manage all these new buses and services.
SPV will be responsible for:
- Running the e-bus services and the e-charging stations.
- Creating a well-organised plan for all other public transport in the city, including regular city buses, Vikrams (large shared auto-rickshaws), auto-rickshaws, and e-rickshaws.
- The new SPV will be headed by the Managing Director of the Transport Corporation, and other members will include officials like the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) of Dehradun.
