The Uttarakhand government has announced plans to recruit 2,100 vacant assistant teacher positions in government primary schools across the state. The decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the primary education system and ensure that all teaching positions are filled.
School Education Minister Dr Dhan Singh Rawat chaired a review meeting of the School Education Department on Wednesday at his official residence. During the meeting, he directed departmental officials to expedite the recruitment process for assistant teachers. He noted that over the past two years, 2,906 vacant primary teacher positions have already been filled.

The recruitment process had faced delays due to legal challenges regarding the inclusion of NIOS D.El.Ed. candidates. Following a Supreme Court ruling, the state cabinet amended the Basic Teacher Service Rules, allowing candidates with NIOS D.El.Ed. Qualifications from 2017 to 2019 to participate. The amendment also includes posts for Assistant Teacher (Special Education), widening opportunities for eligible candidates.
Dr Rawat emphasised that primary teachers are part of the district cadre, and recruitment must therefore be carried out at the district level. District Basic Education Officers have been instructed to begin the recruitment process immediately to ensure 100 per cent of primary school teaching positions are filled.
Additional Directives:
-Prepare a three-tier teacher structure to benefit teaching staff.
-Expedite school reconstruction and repair estimates for institutions damaged by recent disasters.
-Fast-track the transfer of teachers under Section 27 to optimise deployment.
Officials present at the meeting included Director General of School Education Deepti Singh, SCERT Director Bandana Garbyal, Director of Primary Education Ajay Naudiyal, and Director of Secondary Education Dr Mukul Kumar Sati.
The government’s efforts aim to improve educational quality and ensure continuity of learning in schools across the state.
