In a major relief for motorists using toll roads, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced an online toll payment system that eliminates the need to pay double charges when a vehicle’s FASTag is missing or malfunctioning. The new system came into effect on November 16.

Until now, drivers whose FASTag failed to scan were required to pay double the standard toll fee in cash. With the new arrangement, motorists can pay the regular toll amount with an additional 25 per cent surcharge through online methods such as UPI apps, including Google Pay and PhonePe.

According to Ishwar Pandey, Manager of the Lachhiwala Toll Plaza, the online payment facility was activated at the plaza shortly after midnight on November 15.

Pandey said the move is already providing relief to travellers who previously had no option but to pay double when FASTag issues occurred.
