Despite the ongoing political turmoil in the country, no one could have predicted a major storm that was about to hit South Koreans in the dead of the night on December 03, 2024. Ensuing panic and unrest at around 23:00, a sudden TV Broadcast took the country back to its pre-democratisation era- when the country saw its first Martian Law post its former military dictator Park Chung-hee’s assassination in 1979. Yesterday’s Martian Law became the country’s first after its democratisation in 1987. The law was declared by President Yoon Suk-yeol, citing the ‘protection’ of ‘liberal democracy from the threat of overthrowing the regime of the Republic of Korea by anti-state forces’. However, the law was revoked after a few hours, after a major outcry broke out in the country.

However, the short period of time between the law’s implementation and it getting revoked, was more than enough to trigger a huge wave of reactions from all around the globe. Amid reports and news of the same, a Canadian man decided to check up on his South Korean friend. However, the way the said friend responded, surely left the man and the rest of the internet thinking otherwise of Korea's democratic and political status.

“Hey, what is going on in South Korea today?” the Canadian man’s text read. “Not sure, playing League of Legends,” responded the Korean man. “They declared martial law or something?” the Canadian man asked further, only to get the funniest response- “League of Legends.”

Needless to say, the post went viral. Coming back to South Korea, “In order to protect liberal democracy from the threat of overthrowing the regime of the Republic of Korea by anti-state forces active within the Republic of Korea and to protect the safety of the people, the following is hereby declared throughout the Republic of Korea as of 23:00 on December 3, 2024,” the statement reportedly read. The law, as per reports, was revoked within three hours, as it was ‘declared invalid by National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik’.

The post began to circulate on social media, soon after being shared. Most found the man’s ‘obsession’ with the game amid political chaos ‘relatable’, while the rest couldn’t stop joking about the entire matter.

The post was shared on X (formerly Twitter), by the handle ‘heJackForge’. The post was captioned, “I asked my Korean coworker what was going on in South Korea today.” The post was shared today and pulled 3M views from people.

Taking to the comment section, people shared their take. “Wait till League of Legends goes offline. You’ll see true riot,” a user said. “Unbothered. Moisturized. Happy. In his league. Focused. Flourishing,” added a second person. “lol Java Asian??? Like you can’t tell by the name,” added a third user.

“This is hilarious. But it also shows how the news doesn’t affect regular people as much as we might think,” commented a fourth person. “Martial law < toxic league lobbies. He most likely could have taken on the army alone,” added a fifth user. “He’s just a chill guy who likes to play League of Legends sometimes,” added another.
