Viral Video: A dramatic altercation at a D-Mart store in Pune’s Wagholi area has sparked a fresh controversy over language in Maharashtra. A viral video of the incident has fueled intense online discussions, with people divided over whether residents of the state should be expected to speak Marathi.
The video captures a tense moment at the store’s checkout counter, where a man and his wife are waiting in line. Another customer approaches them and requests the man to speak in Marathi. However, the man refuses outright, stating that he will only converse in Hindi. As the conversation grows heated, the other customer persists, leading the man to stand his ground even more firmly. At one point, he boldly dares the other person to record the exchange and share it online. What starts as a verbal spat quickly turns into a physical altercation, forcing bystanders to step in and break up the scuffle. The argument doesn’t end there—after things settle, the man who insists on speaking Hindi accuses the other of filming him without consent.
The video has drawn mixed reactions across social media. While some believe that anyone residing in Maharashtra should embrace the local language, others argue that individuals should have the freedom to communicate in their preferred language. The incident has reignited conversations around linguistic identity, regional pride, and personal choice, with strong opinions coming from both sides of the debate.

"Hindi is very common in Maharashtra. In Maharashtra, no one compels a specific language. The public is very flexible here. Report this employee," a third user added. "Speak a universal language of love … there will be no fights … you guys are so foolish fighting for a language .., Animals are better beings than humans," a fourth user added.
